It's Fun to Be an Angel...

After kvetching about the ever-earlier Christmas "shopocalypse" -- what did I do today but enter the local Pamida, Outer Podunk's big-box store, and take a name off the community Angel Tree, where citizens can pick the name of a needy child or vulnerable adult and buy them a desired Christmas gift.

But I love doing this...it's really one of my favorite holiday activities.

Every year one name in particular seems to jump out at me and say, Hey! Pick me! This year it was an 8-year-old girl whose only wish was for science books. My inner child -- the one who always longed for, but never got, a kiddie microscope and science kit -- gave me a high-five.

I just got done placing my Amazon book order. Oh, yes -- this is fun.

Yes, it is. I look forward to our Angel Tree all year.

What books did you get for her?

And then there is Arnold Roth's "Crazy Mixed up Book of Science," if I am remembering the title correctly. I read that over and over again as a kid - filled with funny drawings, bad puns, and a ton of real science information. Learned a great deal while having fun!

Ten years ago, my wife and I lost a child during pregnancy. after 5 1/2 months, the baby just died. There was no explanation forit, he just died.

Every year since, we have selected a child from the angel tree that is the age that our child would be. This year we will choose again and pass on that same love we show our children.

I love angel trees...and the angels!

I am totally stealing the word Shopocalypse for the newsletter article I am writing this morning.

I love angel trees, too!

I'd like to say I coined "shopocalypse," but I bow to Morgan Spurlock, the "Supersize Me" director.
