It's a coal chute. Used long ago to store and supply coal for steam engines. These concrete silos were once a common sight along railway tracks but the advent of diesel/electric locomotives has made them obsolete.
I'm reading Marcus Borg's "The Heart of Christianity". In it, he makes numerous references to Dietrich Bonhoeffer and in one case mentions the poem above. How fortunate I am to find it here! Thanks!
Looks to me like either a coal chute or an odd water tower (I don't see the water pipes, but they might could be rusted away). Not a yard tower (no windows) or a signal tower (too big)... Of course, hard to tell the scale--how big are those trees? Hmmm....
Lorna, Dale and RP all get it right. It's a coaling station. This is one of 15 left in the state of Michigan, and it's located on the outskirts of a little village called Lake Station.
