It's Amazing...

...how many other things I can find to do when it's time to sit down and write a sermon...

I know someone in my household with a similar problem. Drives me crazy!

Ah, he must be an adrenalin junkie too.;-) And I really do my best work when I'm under the gun...I used the Saturday essay, which I'd written at leisure, as a kind of scaffolding for tomorrow's sermon, and in frantically retooling it I found all sorts of errors in it. So the last-minute version is an improvement.;-) Deadlines concentrate the mind powerfully!

Right there w/ ya, LC. (Though, w/ the file for my sermon open a few Windows away, I keep tossing an odd thought or three that way).

I've only done this once . . . and that was in 1991---or maybe 1990: it was the Sunday after Christmas, and I remember---cleverly!---turning the Flight Into Egypt (and Return) into a metaphor for ecumenism (I was preaching in my home parish in Sacramento, after my first semester in seminary: I was at Union to "study ecumenism", after all! *g*)

Oy: lotta water (much of it tears) under the bridge since then . . . :-/

Just found your blog. I'm also an ELCA Lutheran, and have 6 blogs. This week I'm teaching blogging on vacation. I look forward to browsing through your archives.

Yes indeed, LC, I'm teaching a long awaited day long seminar on prayer tomorrow and, as such and of course, spent yesterday weeding, mowing, weeding, mulching, weeding, eating snow peas, weeding and still wrote half a sermon for 6 weeks from now [when I come back from holidays] and recorded two songs for an upcoming bush service. I've suddenly realised that US folk may not understand but a bush service will literally be held in the great Aussie outback complete with stinging black ants, flies, more files, no power and no amenities. So I'll be using a portable CD player and a battery powered buskers amp to provide music for hymnody and a liturgy for and Outback Service from seasonofcreation.com mostly prepared by an ex seminary lecturer of mine, Norm habel.
Today was spent avoiding my office and spreading wonderfully foul sea weed extract before the rain came. Still no sign of Sunday's sermon let alone the thought starter sheet for tomorrow.
As Douglas Adams said, "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they whizz past."
BTW, my co-presenter was very taken with your blog excerpt on the hormonally challenged prayer life. Many thanks for the permission to reprint it. Steve Schumacher, Australian Lutheran [pastor]
I look at the length of this and realise aaah, more procrastination

Ah, yes, it's amazing how much housework I can get done when there's a homily waiting to be written (grin).

Well, or maybe just a lot of knitting. Or blogging.

I had a good rhythm down when I was ensconced in parish life. On Monday morning I'd translate and do some initial playing in the texts. Then I'd let them perk until Thursday. That way you've done your prep, lived in the passages a bit and are starting to get nervous about the weekend. Everybody on staff knew that I wrote on Thursday so if they didn't see me pacing around in the halls, they'd start hounding me... And that's the way I write it, I wander around and start talking it out, then write down what I hear. I like doing it that way better because it keeps it oral throughout--if I sit down and am intentional about *writing* it sounds like a paper. So I talk it instead and transcribe rather than write.

Steve: You exemplify "No worries, mate." LOL (As I recall, my college friends from Oz exuded this as well.)

My parish isn't quite a bush service...more like a next-to-a-hayfield service...but we're pretty out there as well.

Emily: I find that blogging is one of the greatest procrastination devices ever invented.;-) Especially when it comes to housework, which I loathe.

Derek [bowing]: I am not worthy...I am so written-word oriented that I just can't wrap my head around crafting a sermon by talking it out. That is great. Wish I could do it.
