Debate Forum Detox Report

I haven't posted on Beliefnet's Christian-to-Christian Debate Forum in about three weeks now.

And it feels mahhhhvelous.

Today I stopped in just to read through the topic threads...and I'm quite sure that catholic Christianity will not stand or fall on the basis of my continued non-presence there. Whew! What a relief. (That was a joke.)

See?

;-)

Seriously: good for you. There comes a point when it's just bad news to continue arguing with people who won't ever be convinced. Believe me, I know. And I still get sucked in! But then I remember I shouldn't be doing it and excuse myself and leave. And I feel better right away.

The problem is - and I've said this before - that there's something about religion that makes some people impervious to reason. We had all these arguments - the ones about gay people, I mean - in the secular world many years ago, and once people thought about things, they said, "Oh. Yeah. You're probably right." And that was it.

This doesn't happen when arguing in the religious arena, and it just becomes an eternal rolling of the stone up the hill, over and over and over again. So at some point it pays to cut one's losses and go.

But I think some people have been convinced. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell who's who. Meantime, I'm enjoying a nice relaxing iced coffee.....
