Requiem in Pace...

...to my green Pyrex mixing bowl. You know -- one of the ones in primary colors that everyone's mom had a set of in the 50's and 60's. My mother had broken the small blue bowl of the set sometime before I was born, I think...but the other three bowls have been in our household my entire life.

The green bowl, in particular, was the workhorse of the trio, holding innumerable batches of cookie dough, meatloaf, pancake batter and leftover soup. So imagine my dismay when, as I dried it and slipped it inside its big yellow bowl-sibling on the shelf, I heard an ominous crack and clatter, and looked to find it in ruins -- collapsed into several jagged pieces.

I guess it was just its time to go. But now I am sad.

I just searched on ebay for "green pyrex bowl" and 90 items came up, including a number of primary color green mixing bowls.

Don't be sad....ebay is there for us all :-)

How sad. The red one was the last to bite the dust in my house.

I remember one particular coffee mug that I had for ages. It was my all time favorite and it was just such a perfect mug for coffee. One day I was careless and bumped it with my arm, knocking it to the floor. It fell in excruciatingly slow motion, bounced once and I thought, "Thank you Jesus it didn't break." Then as I bent over to pick it up, my favorite coffee mug of all time that I had for what seemed like ages, broke apart in about a ga-zillion pieces....sigh.

I had a beautiful souffle dish with parsley painted on the sides, that met a sad end after 20+ years when one of the plates from our waffle iron fell on it. The problem with losing things like that is, it's not just some old dish to you...it reminds you of your mom, or the person who gave it to you, or the first house you lived in when you had it...certainly you can find one on ebay, and you might do that, but it's just not the same, is it?
I'm sorry :( .

I know how it feels to break something special.

Oh, Rats!

The blue bowl lost it about a year ago.

My youngest son has proved to be fatal to all breakables. Most recent casualt was a beautiful Lladro angel that had survived the two older kids. Even though it was safely (so we thought) esconsed on an upper shelf out of reach, our son managed to send it plummeting to it's untimely death using one of those sticky hand toys,

go figure.

I always told my mom that if I ever found a blue Pyrex bowl during my "junque" hunting excursions I'd buy it so her set would be complete again. So I am going to do that. It'll just come with a green bowl as well.;-) I can't make Christmas cookies without my green bowl!

oh dear! I have 3 of those (1 yellow & 2 green) that were my mother in law's. My DH has told me how they are special to him...don't think he has ever said that about any other household object. So I am SOOOOOOOOOO careful with them!
