Ego-deflating update: I finally picked my 'mater today and found that there was a spot of blossom-end rot on the fruit...that's probably why it ripened so quickly.
On the plus side, after cutting off the bad part, the rest of the tomato was quite tasty -- very sweet, but also with a definite tang. We'll see how the rest of them on that vine turn out. And, in the meantime, one of my Amish Paste tomatoes is turning orange...give it a week and we'll do a taste test of that variety.
We're growing a vegetable garden behind the church and parsonage and taking the produce to the local foodbank. We've had a few ripe tomatoes but they all had dark mushy spots at the bottom. I know nothing about gardening except putting the plants in the ground and watering them. What's wrong with the tomatoes and is this going to happen to all of them? We've got a lot of plants back there, over 30, what should we do?

Well, you definitely beat me, and by about three weeks, I think. I still have lots of little green tomatoes, but that's it.

Actually I'm shocked, because usually the heirlooms have a long growing season.
